Organized by VisArts resident curator Gabrielle Tillenburg, the collective exhibition “Sound of Fireplace” is part of an ongoing analysis mission analyzing artist responses to the impacts of U.S. army involvement from a transnational strategy. VisArts explains, “Whereas many of the artists whose works are on show are Puerto Rican, the presence and impression of US army are examined on and past the island.” Artists embody Nayda Collazo-Llorens, Jonathan Perez, Eric Rivera Barbeito, Jezabeth Roca Gonzalez and Joshua Roca Gonzalez, Jess Shane and Katie Mathews, in collaboration with Mansoor Adayfi, and John Dominic Colón.
“Sound of Fireplace” is on view from January 25 to March 12, 2023, at Kaplan Gallery—positioned at 155 Gibbs Road (Suite 300), Rockville, Maryland.
Description: Sound of Fireplace is part of an ongoing analysis mission analyzing artist responses to the impacts of US army from a transnational strategy. Gabrielle Tillenburg (she/her) is an impartial curator from Rockville, MD. As an artwork historian, she focuses on fashionable and modern Caribbean and diasporic artwork whereas pursuing her doctorate on the College of Maryland in School Park. Her analysis focuses on creative responses to US army presence on the Caribbean and Pacific islands. Bridging her scholarship and curatorial observe, she is excited about artist activism in independence actions, interpretations of time in photographic media, and modern use of craft supplies. Her curatorial tasks have included Re∙Solid: Sculptural Works from the AMA Assortment at UMD Artwork Gallery, Previous Course of at Strathmore, Gentle Serve at Willow Road Gallery, and public artwork installations at Torpedo Manufacturing unit. She has labored on Smithsonian Nationwide Portrait Gallery exhibitions such because the Outwin Boochever Portraiture Competitors and was the Exhibitions Coordinator at Strathmore. She holds a BFA in Movie from the College of Central Florida.
