A panel dialogue and tribute to the Antonio Benítez Rojo’s La isla que se repite: El Caribe y la perspectiva posmoderna [The Repeating Island: The Caribbean and the Postmodern Perspective] will happen on Thursday, November 3, 2022, 2:00-3:00pm, on the Steven and Dorothea Inexperienced Library (11200 SW eighth Road, Miami, Florida) at Florida Worldwide College.
In 1992, Duke College Press launched the English translation of La isla que se repite: El Caribe y la perspectiva posmoderna (initially printed in 1989) as The Repeating Island: The Caribbean and the Postmodern Perspective. On this e-book, the Cuban exile novelist, short-story author, and essayist Antonio Benítez Rojo (1931–2005) redefined the Caribbean by drawing on historical past, economics, sociology, cultural anthropology, psychoanalysis, literary idea, and nonlinear arithmetic. The metaphor of “the repeating island” has been amply cited and mentioned to determine the historic regularities—particularly arising from the plantation “machine”—that characterize the Caribbean area regardless of the obvious disarray. The e-book is broadly thought to be probably the most influential essay within the interdisciplinary fields of literary and cultural criticism on the Caribbean of the writer’s technology.
Organized by FIU’s Division of Trendy Languages, this panel dialogue will study Benítez-Rojo’s legacy in Latin American and Caribbean research. Particularly, it’s going to handle the methods wherein Benítez-Rojo’s work deeply investigates and illuminates Caribbean literatures and cultures and paves the way in which for postcolonial and archipelagic approaches. The panelists embody Drs. Erik Camayd-Freixas (FIU Division of Trendy Languages), Jorge Duany (Cuban Analysis Institute), Yolanda Martínez-San Miguel (College of Miami), and Enrico Mario Santí (Claremont Graduate College).
The occasion will probably be accompanied by the screening of three movies by Eliecer Jiménez, a Ph.D. scholar within the Division of Trendy Languages: Entropy (2013–19), Island (2022), and The Repeating Island (2022), which stands as a tribute to the Cuban author. This system will conclude with a photographic exhibition of the Jiménez trilogy.
