One of the best biographies marry the abilities of a perceptive biographer and an advanced topic. In Miranda Seymour’s new biography of British author Jean Rhys, readers will discover a good match.
Seymour has chronicled some tumultuous lives (Robert Graves, Mary Shelley) and Jean Rhys’ story matches these sagas in drama, hardship and heartbreak. Greatest identified for her 1966 novel “Broad Sargasso Sea,” Rhys was born to the planter class of the Caribbean island of Dominica, a “white Creole,” a white islander who stood aside from the island’s principally Black inhabitants. It was this upbringing that might inform her most well-known guide, her reimagining of the lifetime of Mr. Rochester’s mad Creole spouse in Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre.”
In her novels and brief tales, Rhys portrayed girls who had been spurned and judged by society. She was certainly one of them. She left Dominica as a teen and moved to England, the place after a quick appearing profession, she turned the mistress of a rich Englishman.

Why has her work endured? Seymour sums it up: “Writing from pitiless self-knowledge, Jean Rhys addresses the watchful and lonely outsider who lurks inside us all.” Hers is a compassionate and unflinching portrait of a renegade of tenacity and expertise, for whom writing was the very best and solely factor. All the things else was a complication.
