Exhibition: “Bacchanal—Le We Be Free”

Bacchanal explores the historical past of carnivals. How did a harvest celebration for slaves change into the world’s most iconic road social gathering?

The exhibition seems on the historic roots of Caribbean Carnivals, which had been developed by enslaved folks introducing drums as a hyperlink to their African heritage.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a drum created by artist Ashanti Harris as a part of a latest efficiency occasion, Dancing a Peripheral Quadrille. The present additionally options associated artworks from the College’s Museum Collections in addition to archival materials exploring carnivals within the Caribbean in addition to Dundee’s personal historical past of carnivals, gala’s, masques and pageants.

The exhibition has been curated by researcher and artist Cat Dunn, a PhD candidate at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Artwork and Design, in affiliation with the College’s Museum Companies.
