“DOMESTICANX,” curated by Susanna V. Temkin, is on view at El Museo del Barrio (New York Metropolis) till March 26, 2023. The present brings collectively seven intergenerational Latinx artists and encompasses work, textiles, ceramics, and installations. Artists embrace María Brito (Venezuela/U.S.), Amarise Carreras, Cielo Félix-Hernández, Joel Gaitan, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Misla (who identifies with Nuyorican tradition, and whose work, “El comedor,” is proven above), and Nitza Tufiño (Mexico/Puerto Rico).
DOMESTICANX brings collectively seven intergenerational artists whose practices handle the non-public sphere by works associated to therapeutic, spirituality, ornament, and the house. The present is impressed by the idea of “domesticana,” first theorized by artist, scholar, and critic Amalia Mesa-Bains within the Nineteen Nineties. Proposed as a Chicana feminist response to the male-dominated “rasquachismo,” domesticana shifts the defiant and expressive inventiveness of rasquache tradition to the particular expertise of working-class girls. Drawing from Mesa-Bains’s personal acknowledgement that each one “terminologies should stay porous, sensibilities by no means utterly named, and classes shattered,” Domesticanx expands the artists’s unique Chicana and feminist principle by the sense of latest Latinx intersectionality.
The present encompasses work, textiles, ceramics, and set up – together with a reconceived art work by Mesa-Bains, first introduced at El Museo del Barrio in 1995 – and options works by veteran artists Mesa-Bains, Nitza Tufiño and Maria Brito, alongside the primary museum displays by rising artists Amarise Carreras, Cielo Félix-Hernández, Joel Gaitan, and Misla. Representing completely different backgrounds, genders, and generations, the seven artists introduced in DOMESTICANX mirror sustained and persevering with responses to Mesa-Bains’ exhortation to “undo the injuries of patriarchy and colonization.”
