This summer time, The Heart for the Examine of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration, in partnership with Yale Environmental Humanities, introduced that Hannah Rachel Cole was chosen because the 2022-2023 RITM Postdoctoral Fellow within the Environmental Humanities. Cole’s e book manuscript, entitled A Thorny Approach of Pondering: Botanical Afterlives of Caribbean Plantation Slavery, proposes a technique of studying for plant biodiversity in Caribbean literature. Her digital humanities challenge, Botanical Imaginaries, is a complement to her e book challenge.
Hannah Rachel Cole is a scholar of literature, race, and the surroundings who lately accomplished her PhD in Comparative Literature at Cornell College. Throughout her time because the RITM Postdoctoral Fellow, Cole will develop her e book manuscript and develop her digital humanities challenge.
Her e book manuscript, provisionally entitled A Thorny Approach of Pondering: Botanical Afterlives of Caribbean Plantation Slavery, proposes a technique of studying for plant biodiversity in Caribbean literature. Every chapter pits a well known plant towards a lesser-known species, one a profitable commodity, the opposite from exterior the area of conventional export agriculture. In following these dyads by way of literary works from the Hispanophone, Anglophone, and Francophone Caribbean, she argues that marginal crops produce counternarratives to the tragedy of monoculture by offering materials and symbolic assets to captive topics in plantation societies. She proceeds to look at the species’ afterlives as “superfoods,” cosmetics, and biofuels, tracing how these current patterns of commodification repeat the constructions of the plantation. In the end, her challenge argues for the ability of uncultivated flora by displaying how monoculture societies rely on the “weeds” at their margins.
Cole has printed “Breadfruit within the Wake: Imagining Vegetal Mutiny in Derek Walcott’s ‘The Bounty’” within the Latin American Literary Evaluate, and one other paper from her challenge, “Past the Cane: Studying for Guinea Grass in Biografía de un cimarrón and ‘Paisaje de Arcilla’” was awarded the Cornell Comparative Literature Graduate Scholar Essay Prize.
Cole’s digital humanities challenge, accessible at www.botanicalimaginaries.com, is the public-facing complement to her e book challenge. Begun with funding from the Cornell College Library and Society for the Humanities, it presents interactive maps of plant migration in Caribbean literary texts. She plans to develop the challenge by including new texts to the positioning and creating instruments for customers to check the literary representations of a single species throughout a number of texts.
Because the RITM Postdoctoral Fellow, Cole will assist lead the yearlong “Subjects within the Environmental Humanities” workshop, a part of the Environmental Humanities Graduate Certificates Program. She will even be part of the Environmental Humanities Steering Committee, through which she is going to contribute to the management of Environmental Humanities at Yale. She seems to be ahead to connecting with college students and colleagues within the humanities, social sciences, and pure sciences at Yale.
